The Columba College Junior School comprises six co-educational classes from New Entrants to Year Six. The Dean of the Junior School, Mrs Marion Hogg, is ably supported by five full-time primary trained teachers, a well-qualified Music teacher who takes the primary Music classes and the Junior Orchestra and a part-time primary trained assistant.
It offers high quality and balanced teaching programmes in all seven Essential Learning Areas of the curriculum (English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, Technology and P.E. and Health) and includes specialist Music classes and a Religious Education programme for all pupils.
The children are provided with a learning environment that is vibrant and stimulating and which nurtures academic, sporting and cultural achievements with every child being encouraged to reach her/his full potential in all educational pursuits.
Individual extension and support are provided for pupils both in the classroom and through the Schools G.A.T.E. programmes, for example, Extension programmes offered in 2006 include Science, Creative Writing, Art, Mandarin and Mathematics.
Cultural activities include Junior Choir, Junior Orchestra, Whanau Hui Programme, participation in a range of clubs, and performances at school by a variety of visiting professional theatre and orchestral groups on a regular basis. Annual events such as the Music Concert, Spring Service held at a neighbouring Church and the Christmas Concert and Prize-Giving are special highlights of the Junior School year.
Each year pupils entertain the elderly at local Rest Homes.
All pupils are encouraged in their sporting endeavours and participate in a weekly sports skills afternoon, swimming sessions at Moana Pool in Terms I and IV, mini ball, tee ball, kiwi netball, tennis, badminton and cross country. Professional coaches provide specialist tuition in skill development in some sports.
The Annual Swimming and Athletic Sports are an integral component of the Junior School sports programme and are held in Terms I and IV respectively.
The Columba Junior School fosters a strong family environment where courtesy, consideration and tolerance are encouraged, and where interaction between the older and younger pupils provides positive and worthwhile experiences for both the senior girls and the Junior School children.
