Closing Date for 2010 Applications to Columba College

All applications for 2010 must be received by Friday, 14th August, 2009.

Procedures for Enrolment

All of the above should be received at the School Office (attention: The Principal) by Friday, 14th August.

It is helpful to have applications well before this date with all the accompanying information in a display folder.

Notification of Successful Enrolments

Successful applicants for 2010 will be advised by Friday, 21st August, 2009 and asked to confirm their acceptance of the place offered by Friday, 28th August either by letter or verbally. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised in writing by Friday, 4th September .

Columba College Roll

We have an MOE approved roll maximum of 550 from Years 1 to 13 (International full fee-paying students are not counted as part of the NZ approved roll).

There are two Year 7 and two Year 8 classes at the College with three Year 9 classes. The Years 7 to 13 roll in any given year is approximately 420 girls (excluding International students). The boarding roll is around 110 girls in any given year and it is anticipated there will be seven classes in the Junior School in 2010 as in 2009 (Years 0 to 6).

In addition to the places available in Year 0-1, Year 7 and Year 9, there will be some places available for 2010 at other Year levels depending on the total number of places available within the MOE approved maximum roll of 550 students (Years 1 to 13).

Interviews and Tours of the College

Prospective parents and students enrolled for 2010 will be contacted for interviews and tours of the College prior to the 14th August.

Preference for Enrolment

Columba College is an Integrated School. The Private Schools’ Conditional Integration Act 1975 gives preferential enrolment to certain persons as stated in section 29(1) of that Act. It provides:

29(1) Preference of enrolment - (1) Parents who have a particular or general philosophical or religious connection with an integrated school shall have preference of enrolment.

Extract from the Columba College Integration Agreement with the Government:

20(a) Preference for enrolment at the School under section 29(1) of the Act shall be given to those pupils with parents who have a particular family, religious or philosophic sympathy with the special character of the School, or a particular connection with the School, ….

Maximum Roll

The College’s roll will be managed within the maximum roll of 550 students as prescribed for in the Integration Agreement signed on 26 January, 1994 and its amendments.

Priority in Enrolment

Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

First priority will be given to students who have been accepted as boarders at the Columba College Boarding House.

Second priority will be given to preference students who live within the area deemed to be the Dunedin city boundary as shown on the map below. This area encompasses Karitane to the north, Otago Peninsula to the east, Middlemarch to the west and Lake Waihola and Taieri Mouth to the south.

If the number of preference applications from the Dunedin city area exceeds the number of places available at the College, the following order of priority will be adopted:

In each of the categories a) –d) above, applicants will be listed in order of receipt of their applications. The College will maintain a waiting list that records the date at which each application was received. In each of the categories, available places will be offered to students in the order in which their names occur on the waiting list for a particular year of entry.

Third priority will be given to preference students who live outside Dunedin city, the area of “reasonable convenience” described in priority 2 above.

If places remain for allocation to students in this priority group, selection will be by the same means as that specified for students with second priority status.

Fourth priority will be given to non-preference students. Among non-preference students, priority will be given to those students for whom there is a place and who are accepted into the College Boarding House. Other non-preference students will be selected by ranking them in order as set out in the second priority.

The selection process described for students in priority groups 2, 3 and 4 above will operate at each level of the College, depending on the number of places deemed by the Principal to be available at that level.

Pre-enrolment

Each year, applications for enrolment will be sought by a date that will be published in a daily or community newspaper that is circulated in the Otago/Southland provinces.

Informing parents

Within 10 school days of the closing date for applications, parents will be informed whether their applications have been successful or not. In the case of unsuccessful applicants, parents will be informed that any places that become available will be offered to students in the order in which their names occur on the waiting list for a particular year of entry.
