Design up-and-comer scoops national award

Columba College student Lucy Beres has won the Graphic Design category at this year’s Bright Awards.

Run by the Media Design School, the Bright Awards recognise New Zealand’s up-and-coming creative talents and are open to year 11-13 students from around New Zealand.

Lucy’s work, entitled Black, White and the Inbetween, focused on the lack of representation of people of colour in film.

"The representation of cultures does not translate to film industries overseas, more specifically Hollywood and its consistent dismissal of people of colour actors and actresses for top award nominations and for its now infamous ‘whitewashing’ in film," explained Lucy.

Another Columba College student Sasha Meyer was highly commended for her design entry: Earthsong Eco Campaign.

Suzie Dixon, a visual art teacher at Columba College, said to receive two accolades in the design category was very special and she was incredibly proud of the students’ work.

Winners of each of the Bright Award’s five categories receive $1000 for themselves and $3000 for their schools.
